Help and support

Being diagnosed with any illness can be life changing and it can take some time to adjust to life. There are numerous challenges ahead. However it is a hurdle that can be overcome.  If you can think of life as a journey, it means that you are taking a deviation to your original route, but the destination remains the same. Remember, you can’t change the past, that’s gone. However you can learn from the challenges you have faced and put that knowledge to good use and you can change the future and live in the here and now.

Positively Parkinson’s objective as a charity is the preservation and protection of good health for people with Parkinson’s, or similar neurological conditions. It was established to help people adjust to life after diagnosis and provide public awareness and education about Parkinson’s to the wider community

Keeping Active

It is important to support individuals to remain in work and play an active role within society and take advantage of opportunities to participate in appropriate tailored activities.  There is growing endorsement amongst a number of leading organisations that their staff are their most important ingredient. This can be seen where individuals can remain in work should they wish to and play an active role within the work place and society.

“Can Do” Attitude

Being resilient is key to riding out the ups and downs of life. Having a can-do attitude means taking a proactive approach and resilience to situations in life with the belief that you can tackle challenges and difficulties that occur in life. When you have faith in your ability to handle any situation, you rid yourself of a lot of fear, stress and anxiety. Much of our fear is caused by believing we can’t cope with something, either in a present or future situation. As the saying goes, whether you believe you can, or you believe you can’t, you are right either way, so surely it is better to believe you can, when you can!

Mental Health

In recent times there has been an increase in awareness of mental health, the cognitive and non-motor symptoms, especially in the areas of anxiety, memory loss, depression and apathy. So it is important to keep a perspective on life – remember you are not crazy or lazy, you have Parkinson’s! Think of problems as challenges to demonstrate what can be achieved with a positive mindset.
